Last April, I met Lydia and Matthew in New York City for their engagement session in Central Park.

Spring in the city usually brings that fresh, golden kind of energy. Trees just starting to bloom, people filling the walkways, everything feeling light and effortless. It is the version of Central Park most couples picture when they start planning their engagement photos.

That is not what we got.

Instead, we were met with cold air, steady rain, and the kind of gray sky that makes you pause and wonder if it is worth going through with it.

But Lydia and Matthew showed up anyway.

No hesitation. No overthinking. Just fully ready to be there together.

And that choice shaped everything that followed.

When the Weather Does Not Go As Planned

There is always a turning point at the start of a session like this.

You either spend the entire time wishing the weather were different, or you accept it and allow the experience to unfold as it is.

We chose the second.

The rain softened the entire park. The usual energy of Central Park shifted into something quieter and more intimate. The light wrapped around them in a way that felt calm and almost cinematic, creating a completely different look than a typical sunny engagement session in NYC.

Instead of rushing from spot to spot, we slowed down. We stayed present. We allowed space for real moments to happen naturally.

That is when everything started to come together.

Why Bethesda Terrace Is One of the Best Locations for Engagement Photos in Central Park

We made our way to Bethesda Terrace, and it quickly became the anchor for the entire session.

If you are planning engagement photos in Central Park, this is one of the most reliable and versatile locations you can choose.

The structure of the terrace offers natural framing through the arches, giving your photos depth and intention. The stone tones create a timeless, classic look that does not feel tied to a specific season or trend. And on a practical level, it provides just enough coverage from the rain while still allowing you to capture that iconic outdoor New York City atmosphere.

Bethesda Terrace is one of the few places in Central Park where a rainy engagement session does not feel like a compromise. If anything, it enhances the entire experience.

The Energy Lydia and Matthew Brought Into Their Session

What stood out most was not the location or even the weather.

It was how Lydia and Matthew showed up for each other.

They stayed close, laughed through the cold, and never once let the rain distract them from the moment. There was no pressure to perform or pose perfectly. No focus on whether everything looked ideal.

Just connection.

That kind of energy is what allows a session to feel effortless. It is what turns a set of photos into something that actually reflects who you are as a couple.

You can see it in the small moments. The way they naturally leaned into each other. The way they moved without needing direction. The way everything felt grounded and real.

Looking Ahead to Their Wedding Day

They will be getting married this September 2026, and if this engagement session is any indication, their wedding day will carry the same energy.

Intentional. Present. Focused on what matters most.

Not perfection, but connection.

Planning Your Own Central Park Engagement Session

If you are considering engagement photos in Central Park or anywhere meaningful to you, here is what I always tell my couples.

Do not wait for everything to feel perfect.

The best photos come from being fully present, not from perfect conditions.

Whether you are planning a sunny spring session or embracing something a little more unexpected like a rainy day in NYC, the goal is always the same. To create images that feel natural, honest, and true to your relationship.

If that is the kind of experience you are looking for, I would love to connect and start planning your engagement session.

Rainy days in New York have a way of slowing everything down. Lydia and Matthew made it feel effortless.
